Project Outline

NorWood Consultants have been appointed by a large science-based research facility to undertake investigations and to provide designs and specifications  the alterations necessary to decommission part of a data centre.

NorWood Consultants have undertaken heat loss calculations which have enabled a decommissioning plan to be developed encompassing the safe and suitable systems required to maintain the facility whilst not in operation. This included  A re design of the Ventilation systems and an alteration to the method of heating space

The result of these designs will be a far more efficient use of energy whilst still maintaining the minimum internal  conditions necessary for protection of the buildings fabric.

NorWood Consultants have prepared detailed drawings showing exactly where the required modifications are to be made and how those changes are to be installed

NorWood Consultants  calculations were able to determine the airflow required in the space and for the controls to operate at certain times and within certain external temperatures. Historical weather data formed a basis of the control’s philosophy and as such the cost for the physical changes on site was significantly reduced.

Throughout the project NorWood Consultants Ltd were responsible for the following: –

    • Design of the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Services involved with the additional electric heater battery in place of the larger AHU plant heating
    • Undertaking heat loss calculations in order to ascertain heat loads, fresh air requirements and cooling requirements.
    • Issuing a detailed scoping document for the tendering of the works.
    • Producing a controls design philosophy to be adopted based of historical weather data and to thus keep the size of the small heater battery for the minimal airflow into the empty space to a minimum.
    • Providing client assistance with regard to queries from incumbent contractors.
    • Providing a scoping document drawings and specification of works.
    • Continued support to the client during the tendering of the works.
    • Site monitoring and witnessing of the works as they proceed

Challenges & Benefits

NorWood Consultants have worked closely with this client over many years and they were appointed for this project as they are known and recognised for their attention to detail.

The project is proceeding well and completion is anticipated.
